I had a favorite place in college. It was a retreat center, about 20 miles away from campus. Tucked up in the woods on top of a hill, the retreat house became a safe haven for students. It was a place where one always felt welcomed. We would be greeted by Father Dan and the delicious smell of blueberry pie in the oven. It felt like home. We could talk about anything and not feel judged or like we had to have it all figured out.
Do you have a place to go to "figure things out?" Where do you turn when you feel confused, lost, or lonely? How does your battery get "charged?"
Sometimes we just need quiet.
But our culture isn't too fond of quiet.
When we are quiet, we come face to face with our feelings, our insecurities, and whatever else is going on in our life. Its hard to just be quiet without the radio, the television, or people talking in the background. But if you have a moment...
try it.
Read a book. Sip a glass of wine (slowly). Turn off the TV.
Breathe.
Just be. Even if for 2 minutes. You might actually enjoy it.
By turning off the noise, we can tune in to God.
